How does our scientific VPN speed test work?

At BestVPN.com, we're proud of our pioneering VPN speed testing method. We believe that that our extensive methodology allows us to achieve a much greater degree of accuracy. This means you can be confident that the VPN speeds you see on this page are closer to what you will experience with any of the providers VPNs featured on this page.

So, how does it work?

  1. We get our hands on a VPN's.ovpn (OpenVPN) config files for Hong Kong, Netherlands, UK, and Australia
  2. Our team of developers add these .ovpn files to our speed test system
  3. We then test the burst speed* on the VPN's server (tested locally to our purposefully implemented test server)
  4. We then record average download speed by testing all the servers that we have OpenVPN config files for
  5. This is then repeated for each VPN 3 time a day!

* Burst speed is the max local speed recorded

The results you see on this page are an average consisting of:

  • 60% of the average download speed
  • 40% of the burst speed

Why do we do it like this?

We believe this gives a fair weighting between the average speeds achieved across all the VPN servers that we test - and the very fastest speeds (local burst) achieved during our tests. And, we choose to do it 3 times a day because we like to be thorough.

Will a VPN always slow down my internet?

The short answer is yes. All VPNs tend to slow down an internet connection a bit.

This is because the encryption that the VPN protects your data with - and routing your internet via a VPN server (which means data travels further) - does incur a loss of connection speeds. But, the "fastest" VPNs on this page should have the most minimal effect on your speeds.

One thing to remember: If your internet is extremely slow to begin with, a VPN (even a fast VPN from this guide) can make activities like streaming or gaming very tough. If you're unsure check your internet speeds without a VPN first.

7 top tips for faster VPN speeds

To get the best VPN speeds possible, we recommend trying a few of the tips list below:

  1. Connect to a server closer to you - Select a server that is as close as possible. The closer the server, the faster your connection speeds will be.
  2. Use the fastest VPN protocol - OpenVPN encryption is the fastest secure protocol available on most clients. For more information, check out our VPN encryption guide
  3. Use a wired connection - Try connecting your PC to your router with an ethernet cable.
  4. Using a VPN router - If your device is running a bit slow, having the VPN on the router will free up some valuable computing power. Check out our VPN routers guide.
  5. Use a different port - Some networks slow down traffic over certain ports. If your VPN client has port option try a few of them. Find out more with our Port Forwarding guide
  6. Test a different device - Older devices may not be able to handle the VPN software, and its capabilities.
  7. Temporarily disable your antivirus - If your speeds improve with your antivirus disabled contact your VPN for further advice.

Not only Ivacy are not the fastest VPN provider, they goes against their money back guarantees refusing to refund when subscription were made within 48 hours. They keep pushing to Google while Google rejected refund and ask to contact developer. Base on bestvpn.com results above, it is not true at all. It left out other better VPN provider that perform significantly faster. speedify, windscribe and a few other perform better. correct your typo error (as of 7th December 2019 ??) I think it should be (as of 7th December 2018) instead

Hi everyone, Ray Walsh, I would highly recommend you to review speed of Surf Shark too as it is performing quite good coz this provider is quite new and its servers are not cluttered with users yet. What is more, I've been in China two weeks ago. Everything worked well, as servers are not blocked yet.

I wouldn't recommend it because a VPN will slow down your internet a bit. The fastest VPNs slow your connection down the least possible they don't speed it up, and when trading you don't want any lag at all which is why traders connect via ethernet to their router etc.

This article is somewhat useless due to the fact that few providers that appear at the top are least secure. So if someone was to follow your article he/she should give up security over speed which would be quite ridiculous as we are talking about VPN here. I would always choose security over speed. If I need both for something that truly requires the best speed and still proper protection then I use smaller trustworthy VPN such as Surfshark that I have on the side. My main one is solely expected to exceed at protecting my devices and data even if the speed drops lower than I prefer sometimes.

Hi Derry, This article is about the fastest VPNs. We also have articles on and . Our general article aims to take all these factors into account (plus others such as value for money, features, and whether they can access Netflix) to provide some balanced general-purpose recommendations.
